Out of the Gate is a wonderful beginning to the Gold Rush Ranch series from author Elsie Silver. It is a novella that takes place before the first book in the series and can be read as a standalone. It takes place in Canada and as a Canadian, I’m here for it! I’m also here for small town romances featuring some friends-to-lovers action.
Meet Dermot Harding. He is a 31-year-old ranch owner who has just returned from three years at war. He’s having some trouble adjusting to life back on the ranch. He’s asked to help break horses at a ranch a few hours away called Gold Rush. His hesitation is because he has history with the daughter of the ranch owner. Will he be able to take this job and face her after what happened three years ago?
Meet Ada Wilson. She grew up on a horse and cattle ranch named Gold Rush. She loved her life there and now at 21 years old, she is looking at her last year of college. After she graduates, she has big plans for her family’s ranch other than what is currently being done. So she purchases her first horse. Will she be able to ride this horse, graduate, and bring about change at the ranch?
A huge round of applause for Silver and her ability to hold readers with beautifully penned settings and complex, enticing characters. As a reader, I need authenticity in my characters. I need to be able to visualize their speech and actions, as well as grasp their personalities and flaws. This novella delivered everything I love and more! Silver is a writer with a unique voice, unmatched skill, and ability to focus a storyline. She’s one to follow. Take it from someone who read it as a standalone: you’ll find yourself diving into the series before you can say, “Yea-haw!”
