The first book in the Charley Scott mystery series, Cover Art by Vanessa Westermann de-LIVERS! The cover art (no pun intended) caught me right away and I immediately found myself wanting to know more about this book. I’m really glad I took the chance on it! I found myself at peace while reading this, and I know that’s really strange considering this is a murder mystery but it happened.

Meet Charley. A strong female lead, she is trying to make it as an artist. Meet Matt. He’s trying to make his new chocolate business a success. You’d think that was hard enough, but then one day, someone is found dead and Matt’s chocolates are the murder weapon… it cannot be!

A mystery with many moving parts, secrets, and broken promises, Cover Art had me jotting down a suspect list as I read. There were twists and turns and ultimately, I was incorrect in my guess but WOW… that’s all you get, go read it! I learned a lot, I laughed a lot, and I tried to solve a murder: it was the best way to spend a few evenings of my week.

A strong cast of likeable characters, Westermann’s descriptive writing style really made the story. Her descriptions of the artwork created by the artists and the cottages at the lake (to name just a few) were captured with beauty and easily visualized. It felt like I was back in Muskoka! As an Ontario resident myself, I was excited to devour a book set in a familiar place. I don’t partake in the bougie side of things there and prefer finding a campground and exploring establishments created by locals, not multinational conglomerates.

Which brings me to my next favourite part: the small town setting. I married a guy who was born and raised in one. We now have our forever home there. So I’m a big fan hahaha. I imagined Oakcrest easily and cannot wait to return! I also cannot wait to pull a reread of this in physical form… there’s just something about holding the book that creates a different experience for me.

Thank you, Vanessa Westermann, for an eARC in exchange for my honest review! Want to grab yourself a copy? Find it here.
