Interview with The Bookish Narwhal

The Favor is Adele Griffin’s debut adult novel and explores themes of friendship, surrogacy, and non-traditional family building. The story is centred around two women who create a connection when one of them decides to carry a baby for the other. Griffin experienced a slightly similar experience on her own path-to-family, and used that experience as her foundation for the novel.

As one might expect, writing about something so personal and vulnerable caused many emotions to surface for Griffin. So what did she do? One thing she did was walk – back and forth, across the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a practice that helped her to process the many emotions she was feeling and helped her to gain perspective throughout the process.

You know little secrets writers hide in their novels that only a few people will find? Those are sometimes called “Easter Eggs” and Griffin’s story has, in my opinion, the best one. She named those in the delivery room scene after those who were involved in the birth of her eldest son. Talk about the sweetest thank-you possible!

Adele Griffin is a New Yorker who enjoys living in Los Angeles even if never snows there. She is the author of over 30 books for new and young people, and she loves pull-quotes, bakery cakes (trust me, you don’t want to miss us talking about Easy Bake Ovens), and writing about herself in third person. Find her on Instagram at @adelegriffin or adelegriffin.com for big surprises (okay, no surprises, but that’s where you can find more bio and the book list).
